About Goa State and Field Station:

Goa is India's smallest state, located between Latitudes 15o degrees, 48'00" N and between 14o, 53'54" N and Longitudes 74o, 20'13" E and 73o, 40" 33" E. Goa has a land area of 3702 sq. km, a coast line of 104 km and a population of 1.45 million. There are 2 districts, 11 blocks and 359 villages. Goa is bound on the north by Sindhudurg district of Maharastra state, on the West by the Arabian sea, on the South by Karwar district of Karnataka state and on the East by Belgaum district of Karnataka state. The highest mountain is Sonsogor in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats which is 3,827 feet above sea level.

Panaji is the state's capital, while Vasco da Gama is the largest city. The historic city of Margao still exhibits the cultural influence of the Portuguese, who first landed in the early 16th century as merchants and conquered it soon thereafter. The Portuguese overseas territory of Portuguese India existed for about 450 years until it was annexed by India in 1961.

After a serious epidemic of malaria occurred in 1986-88 in Panaji, a Field Station of National Institute of Malaria Research was established on the request of Govt. of Goa on 6th Sept. 1989 with objectives to Ø      ascertain the factors responsible for malaria outbreak,   study bio-ecology of malaria vector/s, demonstrate malaria control with bio-environmental measures,  transfer malaria control technology to the state and   provide research support to the state NVBDCP and strengthen malaria control activities.

 

Malaria Problem in Goa:

In the post eradication era, malaria was not a serious problem in Goa until 1985 except an outbreak in 1976 in rural Goa. In 1986 an outbreak occurred in the capital city Panaji at a labour camp near a major construction site which was followed by many outbreaks along the coast in the 1990s wherever developmental activities took place. The main vector responsible for the transmission of malaria was An. stephensi in the coastal belt, while An. fluviatilis is a vector in the eastern hilly region of the state. The preferred breeding sites of An. stephensi were wells, overhead tanks, curing waters and masonry tanks while An fluviatilis preferred stagnant water pockets in the streams and river beds, stone quarries and rice paddies. Besides  An. culicifacies is also found in low densities in the sub-coastal belt of Goa where it breeds in irrigation channels, ponds and rice paddies.

Goa field station successfully demonstrated malaria control in Panaji by 1992 and Candolim PHC in 1994-1995. Ever since then many research projects have been successfully completed which are listed below.

Highlights of the Work Carried Out:

1.      Bio-environmental control of malaria in Panaji, Goa from 1989-92 and Candolim PHC, Goa 1994-1995.

2.      Testing of new repellents of mosquitoes eg. Neem Oil and Neem cream.

3.      Biting, resting and breeding behaviour of disease vectors in Goa.

4.      Distribution and evaluation of indigenous and exotic larvivorous fishes.

5.      Large scale field evaluation of new tools for the containment of mosquitoes and malaria e.g. Bacillus sphaericus and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis were used for malaria control in large scale field demonstration trials in Candolim PHC and at Panaji.

6.      Preparation, implementation, training workshops, education and evaluation of curriculum in 225 schools of Goa in collaboration with the lndian Red Cross Society, Goa branch from 1992-2000.

7.      Involved in situational analysis of WHO’s Roll Back Malaria Control Programme in the State of Goa.

8.      In collaboration with Prof. U. M. X. Sangodkar of Dept. of Bio-Technology, Goa University, Field Station has been involved in the isolation, characterization and bio-assay of indigenous strains of mosquito-pathogenic Bacilli in Goa.

9.      Assisted State Govt. in framing bye laws and amending Goa Public Health Act by suggesting incorporation of appropriate mosquito-control provisions in the Act.

10.  In collaboration with Prof. D. J. Bhat of Dept. of Botany, Goa University, isolation, characterization and bio-assay of indigenous mosquito-pathogenic fungi against disease vectors in Goa.

11.  Investigation into malaria problem was carried out in Mumbai in 1997 and 2010.

12.  An in-vivo study on susceptibility of Plasmodium falciparum to chloroquine was undertaken in collaboration with Directorate of Health Services, Goa under a project funded by WHO.

13.  Studies were undertaken on susceptibility of urban malaria vector Anopheles stephensi to commonly used insecticides such as DDT, Malathion and Deltametharine.

14.  Under WHO/USAID project estimation of malaria disease burden in the states of Jharkhand wa undertaken on the basis of active surveillance and socio-economic studies.

15.  Field testing of Pirmiphos methyl and IGR compounds Diflubenzuron and Novaluron was undertaken for vector control

16.  Rapid tests were evaluated for the diagnosis of P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria. Pre-procurement evaluation of RDTs was done for NVBDCP New Delhi.

17.  Advocacy on urban malaria control to Municipal Corporations of Goa and Mumbai was done.

18.  Transfer of bio-environmental control technology to Mormugao Port in Goa was done from 1998-2003.

19.  Health impact assessment and advocacy for the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases in the Konkan Railways Project.

20.  Community randomized evaluation of the effectiveness of insecticide treated nets for malaria control in construction workers in the urban slums of Goa was undertaken. The project was sponsored by NVBDCP, New Delhi.

21.  Outbreaks of Chikungunya were investigated in Maharashtra and Kerala in 2006 and 2007.

22.  A phase III, Randomized, Non-inferiority trial, to assess the efficacy and safety of Dihydroartemisinin + Piperaquine (DHA + PPQ, Artekin) in comparison with Artesunate + Mefloquine (AS + MQ) in patients affected by acute, uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Goa.

23.  Assessment of efficacy, safety and population-pharmacokinetics of the fixed-dose combination of Artesunate-Mefloquine in the treatment of acute uncomplicated P.falciparum malaria in India was carried out in Goa and the project was successfully completed.

24.  WHO SEARO sponsored project on estimation of malaria morbidity in India was successfully completed.

25.  As a part of World Bank assisted project on Therapeutic Efficacy of antimalarials in India, in-vivo resistance to chloroquine in P. vivax was studied in Candolim PHC.

4.      State level Outstanding Personality Award by the Zone XI of the Indian Junior Chamber at ZONCON in October, 1997.

5.      Outstanding Young Indian Award under TOYI programme by the Indian Junior Chamber at the National Conference (NATCON) in Secunderabad, lndia in November, 1997.

6.      Outstanding Young Person of the World Award by the Junior Chamber International during their World Congress held in Manila, Philippines on 17th Nov. 1998.

7.      Recipient of National Academy of Sciences and Royal Society of UK  bilateral Exchange Fellowship Award to visit London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from 16th Aug. To 13th Nov. 2000.
