About Field Station

Undivided Madhya
Pradesh was the largest and 2nd highly malarious state in the country. Ten
districts of Madhya Pradesh has recently separated (November, 2000) to form a
new state called “Chhattisgarh”
It would be interesting to know that 54 million tribals of various ethnic origin
residing in forested areas and accounting for 8% of the total population of
India contributed 30% of malaria cases, 60% of each of total Plasmodium
falciparum cases and total malaria death. In view of the serious problem of
malaria, the Malaria Research Centre, New Delhi (ICMR) established a Field
Station in Mandla, a tribal district since 1986. Mandla contribute 35% of
malaria cases and 29% of P. falciparum in M.P. Studies revealed presence
of two efficient vectors i.e. Anopheles culicifacies and An.
fluviatilis and a high level of drug (Chloroquine) and insecticide (DDT)
resistance.
